If Singapore's landed residential owners goes solar, will it have any impact on the environment?
With 69,000 landed homes in Singapore as of 2019, this is the equivalent of 1,380 megawatt-peak (MWp) or 1.38 Gigawatt-peak (GWp) (assuming the average size of a solar pv system for a landed home is 20kWp) worth of solar systems contributing renewable solar energy to the national grid every single day. To shed some perspective, it is equivalent to generating enough energy to power over 360,000 4-room HDB apartments every month! The greenhouse gas emission avoided is equivalent to almost 740,000 metric tonnes or the planting of 12 million trees* over 10 years!
So here you go, landed homeowners can do quite a fair bit (12 million trees in fact) if they all went solar. So, when is your turn to go solar?

The situation in Singapore...
According to released figures for 2019, 79% of Singaporeans resided in HDB apartments whereas, only 5% of the population resided in landed homes.
This tells us that the people with the means to install Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Systems to begin with, are limited to mostly building and landed homeowners who have their own roofs! And this precious lot of you only makes up 5% of the total residential dwellings in Singapore!
In land-scarce Singapore, Solar Energy is widely known to be a more conventional, economical and practical form of alternative clean energy due to the abundance of sunshine and tall buildings. Although the adoption of Solar Energy has seen some spikes in recent years, why is it that landed property dwellers who can install solar PV systems, are still not actively doing so?
The reason is simple...

The cost of a solar PV system has dropped significantly in recent years. With unused roof-space, it is a no-brainer to consider getting a solar system when the returns-on-investment (ROI) period can be as short as over 3 years to 6 years. In fact, it is encouraged to install as many panels as you can as you will get returns for at least 25 years (the power output guarantee period covered by most solar panel manufacturers). If installed properly, Solar PV systems generally require little to no maintenance unless we see a drop in solar generation that is not due to weather.
